Choosing Coffee

Choosing Coffee

Which blend should I choose?

The good news is there isn't a wrong choice.

All three of our blends have been designed to work beautifully with milk or as espresso, so whichever one you choose, you're going to enjoy it. The real difference comes down to your personal taste.

We always encourage people to experiment. Coffee is a journey, and discovering what you enjoy is part of the fun.

Here's a quick guide to help you choose.

Which coffee is best for flat whites?

If you're a flat white drinker, we'd recommend Gordon Street Blend.

A flat white has a thinner layer of milk than a latte or cappuccino, so the coffee has more opportunity to shine. Gordon has a beautifully smooth body with enough sweetness and balance to complement the milk without overpowering it.

It's probably our favourite pairing.

Which coffee is best for cappuccinos?

For cappuccinos, we'd choose Murray Street Blend.

The rich chocolate and roasted hazelnut notes work incredibly well with the lighter, foamier texture of a cappuccino. Once you add a dusting of chocolate on top, everything comes together beautifully.

If you love a classic Australian cappuccino, Murray is hard to beat.

Which coffee is best for lattes?

Again, we'd recommend Murray Street Blend.

Lattes contain a little more milk than flat whites, so you want a coffee with enough body and strength to carry through. Murray was designed to do exactly that, giving you a coffee that's still rich, chocolatey and full of flavour, even with plenty of milk.

Which coffee is best for black coffee?

If you're mainly drinking black coffee, we'd usually point you towards one of our single origins.

Single origins allow you to experience the unique flavours of a particular farm or region, whether that's bright citrus from Ethiopia or sweet caramel from Honduras.

If you're looking for a blend, we'd recommend Pacific Drive if you enjoy fruit-forward coffees, or Gordon Street if you prefer something smooth and balanced.

Which coffee has the most body?

Murray Street Blend.

It's our fullest-bodied blend, with plenty of chocolate, roasted hazelnut and cocoa notes. If you like a coffee that feels rich and satisfying, particularly in milk, Murray is the one to choose.

Which coffee is the smoothest?

Gordon Street Blend.

It's incredibly balanced, easy to drink and one of our most versatile coffees. Whether you're drinking espresso, a flat white or a long black, Gordon delivers a smooth, approachable cup without losing character.

Which coffee has fruity flavours?

Pacific Drive Blend.

Pacific is our brightest blend, with berry and citrus notes that really come alive, particularly when enjoyed black. It's perfect if you're looking to move beyond traditional chocolate-forward coffees and explore something a little more vibrant.

Which coffee would you recommend for beginners?

Without hesitation, Murray Street Blend.

It's approachable, forgiving and consistently delicious. If you're just starting your specialty coffee journey or you're not quite sure what you like yet, Murray is the perfect place to begin.

It's familiar enough to feel comfortable, while still showing you what freshly roasted specialty coffee can taste like.

I usually drink supermarket coffee. Which blend should I start with?

We'd suggest Murray Street Blend.

The flavour profile will feel familiar enough that it won't be a shock to your palate, but you'll immediately notice more sweetness, freshness and complexity.

Think of it as a gentle introduction to specialty coffee.

Which coffee works best in automatic coffee machines?

All three of our blends perform beautifully in automatic machines.

Choosing the right blend simply comes down to the flavours you enjoy.

  • Murray Street - rich, chocolatey and full-bodied.
  • Gordon Street - smooth, balanced and incredibly versatile.
  • Pacific Drive - bright, fruity and lively.

Which coffee is best for espresso?

All of our coffees are roasted with espresso in mind.

The better question is, what kind of espresso do you enjoy?

  • Murray Street - rich and chocolate-driven.
  • Gordon Street - smooth and balanced.
  • Pacific Drive - brighter with more fruit character.

There's no wrong answer - just different styles.

Which coffee is best for filter brewing?

For filter brewing, we'd usually recommend one of our single origins.

Filter brewing highlights the subtle flavours and characteristics of a coffee much more than milk-based drinks, so it's the perfect opportunity to explore coffees from different producing countries.

Our Ethiopian and Honduran coffees are always fantastic places to start.

Which coffee is best as a gift?

Our Best Sellers Bundle.

It includes our two most popular blends and is the easiest way for someone to experience what Moon Boy is all about.

Whether they're new to specialty coffee or have been drinking great coffee for years, it's a gift that's hard to get wrong.

What's the difference between blends and single origins?

A blend combines two or more coffees from different farms or countries to create a consistent flavour profile.

Blends are designed to be reliable, balanced and versatile. They generally have more body, more sweetness and work exceptionally well with milk, which is why they're the go-to choice for most home coffee drinkers and cafes.

A single origin, on the other hand, comes from one farm, producer or region. Rather than aiming for consistency, the goal is to showcase the unique flavours that coffee naturally develops depending on where and how it was grown.

If you're someone who loves exploring coffee and usually drinks it black, single origins are where you'll discover the most variety. If you're after consistency, body and an everyday coffee that tastes incredible in milk, our blends are the perfect choice.
